Analysis of Adobe Acrobat Reader Update: How To Finally Shut It Up!

Analysis of Adobe Acrobat Reader Update: How To Finally Shut It Up!

Adobe Acrobat Reader likes to update. And update. And update. Ever notice? I turned the update off. But it still continued to update.  I expect computers and software to serve me. Not the other way around. When I tell software to not update, guess what that means?

Analysis of Adobe Acrobat Reader and Updater:

So I decided to do what I do at work a lot. Reverse engineer much of the system and solve the problem.   Here the things I tried, and some of my analysis.  Not in chronological order.

Installed Programs:

I looked at the installed programs.

Adobe Installed Programs From Windows Installer

Adobe Installed Programs From Windows Installer

There is Abobe. But there is no specific program for the updater.

WINDOWS STARTUP:
Nothing.

MSCONFIG:

I looked in the Startup of MSCONFIG. There was an entry for Acrobat Reader in the startup. The swine.  Really, if I need to start the program, I’ll start it.  I had actually unchecked this long ago.

Adobe in MSCONFIG

Adobe in MSCONFIG

WINDOWS  SERVICES:
I looked in Windows Services. Lots of stuff starting. But nothing that looks like Adobe.

WINDOWS SCHEDULER:
I looked in Windows Scheduled Tasks. But didn’t find anything that looked like Adobe.

Changing the settings in Adobe Acrobat Reader – Didn’t Work

When you search for how to turn off updates to Adobe Acrobat Reader, usually the first thing you will see will be how to turn it off in the program itself. So I did that. But it didn’t work. It continued to update itself.

Changing the Settings in AdobeUpdaterPrefs.dat – Didn’t Work

I found another webpage that went into more detail. It said to modify the file, AdobeUpdaterPrefs.dat, found at:
C:\Documents and Settings\??\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Updater5

I made a backup file of AdobeUpdaterPrefs.dat, and did what the webpage said.  But this month I still saw the disobedient software giving me a popup window, telling me that it wanted to update again.

AdobeUpdaterPrefs.dat file:

Adobe Has LOTS of Files Named “Update”.  It’s not one little program. Turns out there are entire directories for the Updater software!

So, even the Adobe software admits. Even though I had shut it off, it still updated daily. Like clockwork.

URLPing is a simple Java utility to ping a URL. The ping returns back the status as either OKAY, ERROR or TIMEOUT. The utility uses the Apache Jakarta Commons HttpClient component.

Block Adobe Updater with Zone Alarm Firewall:

Finally I look in Zone Alarm.

Zone Alarm keeps a long list of all the programs on the computer. With it, you can set permissions for programs to access the internet.

Interestingly, there are lot more Adobe programs listed in Zone Alarm, than in Windows Installer.

I blocked everything, except Adobe Reader 8.1

Still, I did more searching:

Windows Registry:

At, http://www.megaleecher.net/Disable_Adobe_Auto_Updater
There were some suggestions.

(WordPress really sucks!  I just tried inserting the link above at least five times!  And each time, WordPress went back to my list of posts.  That is, instead of inserting the link, and returning to the edit mode.   Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t.)

A number of the suggestions, I had already done, seen above.

One suggestion said, for the Windows registry:
Locate and select the key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\
Right-click on updateMgr, choose Delete and click Yes.

Look there. But there was no such entry.

Do my own manual search of the registry:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Features\68AB67CA7DA73301B7448A3100000030\

remove Updater.api from C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat\plug_ins

I didn’t do this suggestion. I might like to update manually.

Use Another Program:

More from: http://www.megaleecher.net/Disable_Adobe_Auto_Updater

Adobe changes their settings in every version or updates, hence most of the solutions here won’t work.
Here’s the final solution for this problem:

1. Go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs
2. Uninstall Adobe Reader
3. Goto http://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads and download the FREE PDF reader.

It’s faster, more features, no annoyances and works better than the Adobe Reader itself!!

I try installing it. I used both Foxit, and Adobe Acrobat reader to look at the same PDF file. It was an article I had scanned using my Canon scanner.

My impressions of Foxit. It started full screen every time. Requiring me to escape to get back to normal. But worse than that, the image was really grainy.  The document looked a lot better in Adobe.

Conclusion:

I’ll monitor how well using the firewall works.   Hopefully, Adobe won’t waste any more of my time.

I’ve put my analysis here for anyone else who might find it useful.

That’s the type of reverse engineering that I often do on the job.   To really make things work, you have to take things apart and become an expert in many things.  Including things, and especially things, that you have never seen or done before.

Why doesn’t checking the  box in Adobe work the way it is supposed to?  Is it incompetence?  Or, is it a lie and a placebo?  “Just click this, and it will stop”, when in fact, the company has every intention of continuing to update no matter what the consumer wants?

It’s so tough to get satisfaction these days, especially with software.  What would Mick Jagger say?

One Response to Analysis of Adobe Acrobat Reader Update: How To Finally Shut It Up!

  1. webej says:

I read your story — had to laugh! Unfortunately this kind of stuff is all over, and increasing complexity makes it impossible to deal with, just too much crap to figure out. I love portable programs, use without installation, delete completely by getting rid of it, put preferences in a human readable format (like an .ini) file. Being able to start with something as basic as possible and import the rest. Unfortunately it’s most efficient to copy back and forth entire partitions and just accept all the garbage along with it, b/c it is all one immeasurably complex pile of spaghetti and just takes too long to figure out what is related to what.
